The pole qualifier here last year on his way to the 2000 CART FedEx Championship Series crown, Gil de Ferran again is the man to beat here on the streets of Houston, Texas, claiming his fourth pole of the 2001 season. It is the seventh pole of the season for a Honda-powered driver and the third in a row here in Houston for the company.

Team KOOL Green's Dario Franchitti posted the biggest performance gain from Friday's practice, qualifying 6th today after running only 24th fastest yesterday. Helio Castroneves ran fourth today in the second Marlboro Team Penske entry and Tony Kanaan rounded out the top ten for Honda and Mo Nunn Racing.

Michael Andretti also improved seven positions from yesterday, qualifying 12th today, with Fernandez Racing teammates Adrian Fernandez and Shinji Nakano completing the eighth row of the starting grid. Paul Tracy struggled today and could only run 21st. Replacing the injured Alex Zanardi, Casey Mears will make his first start for Mo Nunn Racing from 25th.

Gil de Ferran (#1 Marlboro Team Penske Honda): "The car just has been really good right from when we unloaded yesterday. Today was a case of getting the lap together while the tires were at their best - and avoiding traffic at the same time. Fortunately, we were able to do that this afternoon. I'm very pleased about today but now today is finished and it's time to prepare for the race tomorrow."
