Champ Car Grand Prix of Houston Final Qualifying
Mario Dominguez #7 Pride of Mexico INDECK Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -- "I think Forsythe has done a very good job over the winter. Over this weekend, we've worked very well together. I think the whole team deserves this Bridgestone pole, and so do I. I've been waiting for this for many years. I'm very happy, very excited about the pole position. I am just very proud to be racing for Forsythe. I'd like to thank everybody on the team. Paul has been great to me. He's been a big help over the last year and this year. I think we are a good team together. It was very, very nerve-wracking. We decided to go out at the beginning, get the lap done. We knew the car was fast, get the job done, that was it. Yesterday was red flags. You don't know what's going to happen. We just said, let's just go out, put in a good lap and see what happens. The cars kept running, going by, going faster. I told Michael, my engineer, no matter what happens, great job, the car is fantastic, I'm just very happy."
Bruno Junqueira #2 Newman/Haas Racing Ford-Cosworth/Bridgestone/Lola -- "The car was good. The first set of tires, the soft tires, I did okay lap, 8.9. At that time I was on the pole. Then the next lap was really, really good. Not good as Mario's standard, but maybe 8.5, 8.4. I brushed the wall out of turn five. I think everything looks good on the car. I went out, the car still not feel that good on the other set. I realize that I never could match 8.0. I had a front row guaranteed, so I stopped. I think Mario did a very good job today. For sure I'll have to look, because it looks like the Forsythe team step up today and the Newman/Haas team need to improve for the race tomorrow."
Paul Tracy #3 INDECK Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "I've been just trying to figure out what is making the car so quick for Mario and maybe not so much for me. We made a lot of changes throughout the day today, made some more big changes right before qualifying after the warm-up. The red tires, really the first go around on them, I was really maybe a little bit tentative on them. I probably could have got more on the first set of tires. The second set, I knew what I had to work with and was able to cut a pretty fast lap, but not close enough to Mario. I think it was a couple 10ths behind him. We're satisfied. Obviously, it's changed the balance of how things look from yesterday. It looked like it was going to be a walk-away with Newman/Haas. Obviously, we've worked very hard, it's a different day today. "
A.J. Allmendinger #10 RuSPORT Lola / Ford-Cosworth Bridgestone - "It was a good effort by the whole team. My race engineers, Chris Lerch and Mike Talbott did an awesome job, because we've been struggling all weekend. My crew did a great job fixing the car after we wrecked, this morning, and it was just a good effort by the whole team. I'm really proud of them because it was looking dismal going into qualifying, but they gave me a car that was good enough to help me get a good starting spot on the grid."
Sebastien Bourdais #1 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -- "The McDonald's car was the quickest in every session so I don't know what happened in final qualifying. We put the option tires on for the first time in qualifying and the car as all over the place, so we went back on regular tires and the car was just okay. Then I got in traffic and got frustrated. We'll check everything on the car and make sue the tires pressures weren't affected by sitting out before we put them back on. Maybe we should have made a pressure change. Here anything can happen in the race. We'll see how it unfolds. As far as I'm concerned I'd just like to see the checkered flag. We'll just keep our noses clean, be patient and see if the race comes to us.
Justin Wilson #9 CDW / RuSPORT Lola / Ford-Cosworth Bridgestone - "We made some improvements, but we still weren't quick enough, so it's a bit frustrating to be starting so far back. But it will be a long, tough race, so we'll try to keep out of trouble and see what the race brings. The track is gripping up well, which makes it even more disappointing that we didn't pick up more time, so we'll just go back and study it and see how we can improve tomorrow. The crew is working really hard to make the car quicker, and we're all looking forward to the race tomorrow night."
Oriol Servia #6 Gulfstream - PKV Racing Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "The Gulfstream-PKV Racing car is very good. We were position one or two for most of the time we were on our first set of tires. On the second stint I hit the wall on my first hot lap and bent something on the car. That was pretty much it for our qualifying session. Overall, I am very happy because we have a good car for tomorrow's race, but on the other hand I am not so happy because I made a mistake that hurt us. In the end, on a track like this you have to take some risks if you are going to qualify on the front row. It just did work out for me today."
Nelson Philippe #4 CTE Racing-HVM Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "I expected we could do much better on this street course. Keeping in mind we had a bad start yesterday, it is not such a bad result but we definitely need to work more. The track is really tiring, bumpy, and difficult. The key to tomorrow's race is to finish. We'll take a top ten for today but we are looking for a top five finish for tomorrow's race."
Charles Zwolsman #34 GoldenPalace.com Casino Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "Qualifying was good for us and we were able to improve our position from yesterday. We made some changes to the car and it panned out in the right direction. We have been chipping away at it all weekend and finding little bits of time, it is getting better every time we go out there. Tomorrow should be an interesting race. The start will be very important, especially from our starting position, because the first corner is very tight. It will be a long physical race and we will do our best to pick up some places and finish in the lead pack."
Dan Clarke #14 CTE-Racing-HVM Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -- "Today we ran so well in practice this morning and it proved to be a big improvement from yesterday. I am disappointed in qualifying and losing our fastest time, so twelfth isn't as good as sixth this morning but it's definitely a good recovery from yesterday. I want to thank my crew for doing such a good job at repairing the car. They got just over three hours sleep last night so now they get a pat on the back and can catch up on some sleep to be ready for tomorrow's long race. I am confident we can achieve pleasing results."
Andrew Ranger #27 Tide / Mi-Jack Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -"We had problems this morning in the practice session, I hit a bump while shifting and something on the left rear broke. The Conquest team did a great job to fix it and to get me back on track but we already had lost a lot of time. During qualifying I was able to improve my times every time out, so I am very happy with that and the car is getting better and better. Tomorrow will be a long race and the start will be extremely important. We will have to be careful, I have a feeling we might see a repeat of the start in Long Beach."
Katherine Legge #20 Bell Micro - PKV Racing Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "The second qualifying session was very frustrating for me because I didn't fulfill the potential of the car. The Bell Micro -- PKV Racing car feels good, but for one reason or another I just didn't get a good lap. We have a good race car for tomorrow...I just need to go back to the drawing board regarding my second qualifying effort."
Nicky Pastorelli #8 Rocketsports Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "Obviously I am disappointed with our end result today. We are struggling with the balance of the car. The car was much quicker on the Bridgestone Potenza Reds as they are softer and have more grip. Now that qualifying is out of the way, we can just focus on the race tomorrow. We will work on improving the car tonight, get a few more laps in tomorrow during the warm-up and be ready to race. The race will be a whole different story because a lot can happen. My goal tomorrow is to stay out of trouble and bring the #8 Rocketsports car home in the top ten."
