Defending CART FedEx Series Champion Gil de Ferran led the way today in opening practice activities for Sunday's Molson Indy Toronto, with the Marlboro Team Penske driver quickest in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Honda-powered drivers took six of the top seven positions today, with other strong runs recorded by Dario Franchitti, the winner here in 1999; Mo Nunn Racing's Tony Kanaan; Michael Andretti, who has won six of the previous 14 Toronto events; hometown favorite Paul Tracy; and Helio Castroneves in the second Penske entry.

Adrian Fernandez just missed setting a top ten time today, with Alex Zanardi just two-tenths of a second back and Shinji Nakano rounding out the top 20. Qualifying tomorrow will begin at 1:45 p.m. EDT with same-day coverage on ESPN-2 at 5:00 pm EDT.

Gil de Ferran (#1 Marlboro Team Penske Honda) Fastest in practice today: "The day was pretty good. The car was handling really good since we unloaded the truck. At the end of the first session, I managed to hit the wall and damage the front wing, which wasn't too clever, but we got the wing fixed and I got back out there this afternoon. Certainly, it's going to be very exciting in qualifying tomorrow. I kind of like street circuits in general. It's very challenging to try to go especially fast. Really, ever since last year, we developed a general street circuit setup, and it's working very good here in Toronto so far."
