Rain Dampens Opening Day in Australia

Sporadic showers this morning along the Australian Gold Coast soon developed into continuous showers, bringing an early end to first-day practice for Sunday's Honda Indy 300. Helio Castroneves and last year's race winner Adrian Fernandez led the way for Honda-powered teams today with all competitors setting their quickest time in the opening minutes of the first practice session.

Just minutes into the first of two scheduled practice sessions, the rains increased and with clearing forecasts for the rest of the weekend, several drivers elected not to run at all today, including FedEx Championship Series leader Gil de Ferran. Others, including rookie Casey Mears and 1999 race winner Dario Franchitti, briefly worked on their wet weather setups before calling it a day as well.

Helio Castroneves (#3 Marlboro Team Penske Honda): "It's unfortunate that with the rain today we didn't get much track time, that will make tomorrow's practice even more important. But I know we have a good car for this circuit, it is very challenging and I really enjoy it. Here, I don't think being aggressive is the quick way around, I think smoother is faster."
