Helio Castroneves, winner of last week's Detroit Grand Prix, continues to be the man to beat in the CART FedEx Championship Series as the Honda-powered driver was quickest in practice today at Portland International Raceway in preparation for Sunday's Freightliner/GI Joe's 200.

Less than a half second slower, Shinji Nakano had another strong outing today, the Fernandez Racing driver fifth overall in just his second visit to PIR. Defending series champion Gil de Ferran ended the day in 8th position, despite a spin late in the second practice session.

Alex Zanardi led the Mo Nunn team at 15th overall, while Tony Kanaan was 25th in his first time back in the car after suffering a mild concussion last week in Detroit. Paul Tracy led the Team KOOL Green effort in 16th, as Dario Franchitti was struggling in 22nd, just ahead of Adrian Fernandez and Team Motorola's Michael Andretti.

Helio Castroneves (#3 Marlboro Team Penske Honda) Quickest in practice today: "We actually had kind of an up-and-down day today. We had some problems with the pop off valve this morning that limited our track time, but the up side of this was we didn't run too many laps and our tires were a little bit fresher in the afternoon. By then, we had made some setup changes and had the car handling very well, so it turned out to be a pretty good day in the end."
