An enthusiastic, near sellout crowd at Fundidora Park saw three Honda-powered drivers contend for the pale today in qualifying action for Sunday's Tecate Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix. Battling the effects of the stomach flu, defending series champion Gil de Ferrari still managed to place his Marlboro Team Penske Honda on the inside of the second row, just one tenth of a second behind first-time pole qualifier Kenny Brack.

Teammate Helio Castroneves is along side de Ferran, despite a spin on his final lap, with Team Motorola's Michael Andretti an excellent fifth in his first race with Honda power. Dario Franchitti led Team KOOL Green today with a seventh place run, while Mo Nunn Racing's Tony Kanaan was quickest in the first qualifying group and ended up 12th overall.

Paul Tracy and Adrian Fernandez struggled with traction and handling problems to line up 15th and 19th and mechanical problems forced Alex Zanardi to switch to his backup car just before qualifying and he will start 22nd, with Shinji Nakano 27th after a spin in qualifying.

Gil de Ferran (#2 Marlboro Team Penske Honda} Defending CART FedEx Series Champion qualified third today: "I've been really happy with the car all weekend. I would have liked to have gotten the pole, but considering the circumstances I think we had a good run."
