Marlboro Team Penske drivers Gil de Ferran and Helio Castroneves again set the yardstick for all other CART FedEx Championship Series competitors, leading the first day of practice here at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in preparation for Sunday's Miller Lite 200.

The Honda-powered teammates qualified and finished 1-2 at last year's event, with de Ferran taking the pole and Castroneves the race victory. De Ferran also co-holds the Mid-Ohio lap record, with the 65.347-second (124.394 mph average speed) lap he posted here last year equaling Dario Franchitti's pole effort in 1999.

Mo Nunn Racing drivers Tony Kanaan and Alex Zanardi finished the day 7th and 8th quickest, while Franchitti led Team KOOL Green in 11th place. Along with a total of 14 drivers, all three were in the one-minute seven-second bracket around this twisting 2.25-mile road course, as were Paul Tracy, Adrian Fernandez and Michael Andretti.

Gil de Ferran (#1 Marlboro Team Penske Honda) quickest in practice today: "It was kind of a smooth day for us, really. The car unloaded quick off the trailer and we went from there and made it a bit faster still. It's hard to say if the lap record will be broken here tomorrow. The speeds usually increase on Saturday, but the conditions this afternoon were pretty ideal and all of us are significantly down on straight line speed this year with the (turbocharger) boost reduction made at the start of the year."
