Last year's pole qualifier Paul Tracy led the way for Honda today in opening practice for Sunday's Harrah's 500 at Michigan International Speedway, the first of two 500-mile endurance contests on the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series circuit. Hot and humid conditions, expected to continue throughout the weekend and recent CART-mandated aerodynamic changes to the cars combined to keep speeds well below Tracy record 2000 pole speed of almost 235 mph.

The Team KOOL Green driver was fourth quickest in the afternoon session, and fifth overall on the day in his Honda-powered Reynard. Meanwhile a pair of teammates posted the quickest times of the day: championship leader Kenny Brack and Max Papis of Team Rahal, followed by the Canadian duo of Patrick Carpentier and Alex Tagliani, driving for the Player's-Forsythe team.

Tony Kanaan was another top-ten runner today for Honda and Mo Nunn Racing, with Helio Castroneves just outside the top 12 for Marlboro Team Penske.

Paul Tracy (#26 Team KOOL Green Honda) 5th fastest today: "We were working mostly on our race setup today and we'll focus on qualifying tomorrow morning. The car was pretty good right out of the truck this morning, so we focused our efforts on making it work well in traffic. We're not quite all the way where we want to be for the race, but we're definitely on the right track."
