Honda-powered Mo Nunn Racing teammates Tony Kanaan and Alex Zanardi led the way today in practice for Saturday's inaugural German 500 CART FedEx Championship Series race at the new EuroSpeedway oval in Lausitz, Germany.
Rain showers again delayed on-track activities today, but unlike Wednesday's complete washout, the skies cleared shortly after noon and the two-hour practice began at 3:30 p.m. local time and ran without any major incidents. However, as the normal single-car oval qualifying session was cancelled, the current driver's championship points standings were used to set the 27-car starting field for tomorrow's 500-kilometer event.
In addition to the Nunn Racing duo, Helio Castroneves ended the day sixth fastest, with Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy eighth and ninth.
More than 35,500 fans braved the rain showers today at EuroSpeedway, with the track reporting attendance of 22,000 yesterday. In a continuation of memorial activities in connection with Tuesday's terrorist attacks in the United States, all in attendanc here - and the entire European Union community - observed three minutes of silence today at 12:00 noon local time.
Tony Kanaan (#55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda) fastest in practice today: "It was a pretty good day for us, right from the start of practice. When you have a good car, like we did today, it's easy to learn a new racetrack. The more you run, the more your confidence grows and you just get quicker and quicker. And I have to thank the crowd today. I've never seen this many people at a racetrack on a Friday. Their patience and support with both the weather and everything else that is going on right now, has been fantastic. There's no point in celebrating, but we should just carry on and do our job for the fans."
Alex Zanardi (#66 Pioneer/Worldcom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda) 2nd fastest: "I love this circuit, it is beautiful. It's a little scary in a couple of the turns because you are facing the wall briefly, but it is very, very well built. It's just a shame that we're starting on points (rather than practice results) because it means that will be starting from somewhere downtown, rather than the front. But when you have a good car, you only want to go racing and I can't wait. Even though I'll be starting from the back, I'm still looking forward to the race."
