Once again, the Honda-powered Marlboro Team Penske duo of Helio Castroneves and Gil de Ferran dominated qualifying here at Laguna Seca Raceway, with de Ferran taking his fifth pole of the season for tomorrow's Honda Grand Prix of Monterey.

The pair took turns at the top of the speed charts during the 30-minute session, with de Ferran taking the pole with just three minutes remaining - then promptly spun off at the third turn of the hilly 2.24-mile road course.

Paul Tracy and Tony Kanaan rounded out the top five for Honda today, while Casey Mears continued to improve in just his third CART Champ Car race, qualifying 18th between Fernandez Racing teammates Adrian Fernandez and Shinji Nakano. Dario Franchitti's tough weekend continued, however, as the Cleveland race winner could not find the speed today and dropped to 22nd overall.

Gil de Ferran (#1 Marlboro Team Penske Honda) series-leading 8th pole for Honda: "It was a difficult qualifying session today. I knew Helio and a couple of other guys would be really fast, but I was very happy with the car this morning, it was better even than yesterday. In qualifying today, I had a good first run, then came in and made a couple of adjustments. But after I started my second run, I just could not get a clean lap, there was traffic everywhere. Finally I said `okay, let's go', found a gap and got a clean lap going. That got me pole, but then I tried for one more, spun off and hit the tires. Not a good way to end the session, but the car is okay, no real damage."
