The Honda-powered Marlboro Team Penske duo of Helio Castroneves and Gil de Ferran, who finished 1-2 in last year's Honda Grand Prix of Monterey, again led the way today in opening practice for Sunday's race here at Laguna Seca on the California central coast.

After a run of bad luck in recent events, Paul Tracy returned to form today with a seventh-place run for Team KOOL Geen, with teammate Michael Andretti in the Team Motorola entry also solidly in the top ten.

Like several other teams in the field, Fernandez Racing teammates Shinji Nakano and Adrian Fernandez ended the day next to one another in times, three-tenths of a second behind Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti. In his second race weekend as replacement for the injured Alex Zanardi, Casey Mears continues to show improvement and finished the day 23rd overall.

Helio Castroneves (#3 Marlboro Team Penske Honda): "The car was good right from the start this morning. We were pushing really hard all day. I don't know if the other guys are `sandbagging' or what, but we are giving it our all. We are trying to go as fast as we can and find the limit because that's what it's going to take to get the pole tomorrow."
