Once again, Marlboro Team Penske demonstrated outstanding performance on the street and road circuits of the CART FedEx Championship Series, with Gil de Ferran leading the way in opening practice for Sunday's Grand Prix of Houston, with teammate Helio Castroneves third.

Mo Nunn Racing's Tony Kanaan and team owner/driver Adrian Fernandez also posted top ten times today, with most of the 27-car field setting their best times in the morning practice session. Shinji Nakano led the way in the afternoon practice, on a track dampened by several light rain showers, and finished the day 14th overall.

Casey Mears made his debut today for Mo Nunn Racing, replacing the injured Alex Zanardi. The Indy Lights graduate will be making only his second Champ Car start this weekend after finishing fourth in the California 500 last year.

Gil de Ferran (#1 Marlboro Team Penske Honda): "We had a good car right from when we unloaded. We just made a couple of minor changes as the day went on. The rain in the afternoon was good for us, too. It gave us a good, low-pressure, wet track practice and I quite enjoyed it. This is a good track for testing in the wet. I like street courses in general. They present a special challenge - different from road courses and for sure from any oval. With the ever present walls, you can't make a mistake anywhere, yet you have to stay on the limit, a limit that is constantly changing with the track conditions."
