Nakano Leads Honda Qualifiers

Shinji Nakano led the Honda-powered drivers today in qualifying for the Marlboro 500 here at California Speedway, the season-ending race in the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series with a $1 million prize for the race winner.

Nakano's 12th place run today continued a string of strong qualifying runs for the Fernandez Racing driver on super-speedways this year. Nakano was fifth fastest at the postponed Texas Motor Speedway event and qualified 8th at Michigan Speedway.

Teammate Adrian Fernandez was forced to abort his qualifying run due to mechanical problems, while other Honda-powered teams continued to work on their performance and stability in traffic, as the draft is again expected to play a large role in the outcome of tomorrow's 500-mile run. Tony Kanaan, Gil de Ferran and Paul Tracy will all line up directly behind Nakano.

Shinji Nakano (#52 Fernandez Racing Honda): "The run was no problem, we took off some downforce for qualifying and the balance stayed the same, so it was a good run. In fact, it was the best car I have had all weekend. We know we also have a good car for the race, it works well in traffic and that's more important here."
