Paul Tracy led the way today for Honda in opening practice for Sunday's Marlboro 500, running third overall today in preparation for the 500-mile race, the final event of the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series.

Fernandez Racing teammates Shinji Nakano and Adrian Fernandez also ran strongly today, ending the day sixth and tenth overall. Although ranked 13th and 16th today, both Dario Franchitti and Michael Andretti said they were happy with the performance of their Honda-powered entries.

Although he set a new world closed-course record here last year, newly crowned series champion Gil de Ferran and teammate Helio Castroneves struggled today, running 23rd and 26th overall. Qualifying for Sunday's race, which pays $1 million to win, begins at 11:15 a.m. PST with same-day television coverage on ESPN-2.

Paul Tracy (#26 Team KOOL Green Honda): "The team did a good job today. We were fast right off the truck, which is what you need to do at a place like this. We'll hopefully continue to be fast tomorrow, get a good qualifying spot, keep the momentum going through Sunday and take home a million bucks! We think we've got a good race car and if we can hang around long enough during the race we should be in a position to go for it at the end."
