Defending race winner Helio Castroneves, who cemented his nickname of "Spiderman" by climbing the spectator fence after winning this year's Indianapolis 500, will again be the man to beat here on the streets of Detroit, claiming the pole position for tomorrow's Grand Prix of Detroit.

It was the third pole this season for both Honda and the Marlboro Team Penske driver as Honda-powered drivers claimed three of the top four qualifying positions. Defending series champion Gil de Ferran will start from the inside of the second row, alongside Team KOOL Green's Dario Franchitti. Shinji Nakano posted another strong qualifying effort to wind up 9th, with Michael Andretti, Adrian Fernandez and Alex Zanardi all grouped together a little further back.

Paul Tracy had a pair of off-course excursions, resulting in a disappointing 23rd place run, while Tony Kanaan may not start tomorrow's race after he also crashed in qualifying. The Brazilian is being examined for a possible mild concussion following the accident.

Helio Castroneves (#3 MarlboroTeam Penske Honda) Pole qualifier today, 6th career pole: "It was a very exciting session. We had a good street course setup, but I knew I had to get the maximum out of the car right away. My first run was pretty quick (moving him to the top of the time chart), but I knew that Gil (de Ferran) and the others were 'right there' as well. So we put the second set of tires on a little bit earlier than usual and I just went for it. Gil and Bruno (Junqueira) really challenged, but today was our day."
