Homestead, Florida, February 7, 2000 --- Rookie Player's Team driver Alex Tagliani will get a sampling of the challenge that awaits him this season when, along with his veteran teammate Patrick Carpentier, he takes part Tuesday in the fourth annual FedEx CART Championship spring-training session on the 1.5-mile Homestead oval.
"I'm most definitely looking forward to spring training," remarked Tagliani, the Canadian driver who figures to battle Sweden's Kenny Brack, the defending IRL series champion, for CART rookie-of-the-year honours. "This is an ideal opportunity for me not only to get accustomed to my surroundings but particularly to see how I stack up against the top drivers in the series. I've gained confidence from the results of my winter testing sessions with the Player's Team, and now I'm excited about assessing the competition that I'll be facing once the season begins."
The three-day spring-training activities mark the first time this off-season that the Canadian driver duo will be sharing the track with all of the drivers in the FedEx CART Championship series. Carpentier noted it will also be an important step in honing the set-up package heading into the first race of the season, which will take place on this same Homestead track on March 26.
"Since we're now using the Ford-Cosworth engine, we have to deal with new data, and that's why we're taking full advantage of each day we're on the track to fine-tune the adjustments on the Player's/Reynard cars," explained the 28-year-old Carpentier. "Even though the testing we conducted here in January was conclusive, training camp is the perfect time to make sure the setups are just right as we look toward the opening race of the season."
Added Carpentier: "Based on past experience, I think we'll be right up there among the leaders. In fact, success at Homestead seems to be synonymous with the Player's Team. Whether it's been in testing or in races, we've always produced some good results on that track and I'm going to do my best to ensure that happens again."
While on-track testing is scheduled for February 9-10, the session on Tuesday, February 8, is devoted to various promotional and media activities. At that time, the media will have the opportunity to meet all of the Champ Car drivers, who will also be taking part in a number of official photo sessions, for both the series itself or various manufacturers such as Ford-Cosworth and Firestone.
The CART spring-training session marks the second on-track testing by the Player's drivers this week, since both Carpentier and Tagliani conducted tests on the Sebring, Florida road course last weekend. Carpentier is seeking to duplicate his performance at the 1999 spring-training event, where he was the fastest driver in the two-day session.
