FORD-COSWORTH SERVES NOTICE AT MIAMI
After posting the top-seven positions in the morning practice session, Ford-Cosworth powered teams focused on their race day setups. Many teams chose to spend the afternoon session focusing on long runs in an attempt to home their race day setups. However, even the shift in team focus could not keep the powerful Ford-Cosworth XF engine from claiming two of the top three positions at day's end.
Leading the way were the Lola Ford of Christian Fittipaldi and the Reynard Ford of Patrick Carpentier. In all Ford teams dominated the trap speeds and posted six of the top-eight combined practice speeds of the day.
PATRICK CARPENTIER -32- Player's Ford-Cosworth - 3rd Fastest- "We were fast off the trailer. This afternoon though, we worked on full tank runs. We are not where we want to be yet, but I think we can improve it for Sunday. It was real windy today, but it was good to run in it and see how the car behaves."
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE NEW FORD ENGINE? "I am very happy with the decision the team made (to switch to Ford power). The engine has proven to be very powerful and very reliable. Other than a few external problems we have not had any problems."
ALEX TAGLIANI -33- Player's Ford-Cosworth - 8th Fastest - "We had a half-hour lost this morning (due to the incident on pit road) so we were working very quickly to get back up to speed because we are working on our race preparation. We are not in our qualifying mode right now, which hurts us a bit, but we still managed to go back to where we wanted. We didn't have the chance, like many of the guys this morning, to go out on a fresh set of tires and go out and do a fast lap. The car is decent right now. We still need to work on the rear end a bit because it isn't very stable in the wind and over the bumps, but we are working on it."
CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE ABOUT THE SPIN THIS MORNING ON PIT ROW? "We looked at the data and everything was the same between the primary car and the backup car. But the backup car had a big, huge problem with the brakes."
MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - 7th Fastest - "We worked on full-tank runs this afternoon and sorted out the car. It was a bit difficult this afternoon with the windy conditions and it is confusing the situation a bit. We are not at our best, but we are not too far off."
KENNY BRACK -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - 6th Fastest - "I think we are on the right track. We could be better, we could be worse. I can't complain. The team is doing a great job and we are just working away at it. If we keep at it we will get there. The wind was pretty bad out there today though."
MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - 5th Fastest - "We are in pretty good shape. The car feels good. We worked on full tanks this afternoon and I think we are going in the right direction.""
CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big Kmart/Route 66 Ford-Cosworth - 2nd Fastest - "In the afternoon session we were running full tanks and working on race setup. At the end of the session we put on new tires on to see how the car was going to react and give us some food for thought for tonight. I was just very happy with our full tank runs today. I think in the past test sessions that is a place where we lacked."
WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO WIN THE POLE? "I think you will see the pole time somewhere around high 25 to low 26 seconds. It's going to depend a lot on the wind."
WHAT ARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF THE NEW FORD ENGINE? "Last year, when I tested it at that famous St. Louis test, the engine was great out of the box and it only got better over the winter. There is a lot more to come and I am very happy with what I have and the work Ford has done."
ROBERTO MORENO -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - 15th Fastest - "At this point we worked on empty tanks in the morning to get a handle on our qualifying setup. This afternoon we worked on full tanks, but we developed a little oil leak, which cut our day short. The car isn't quite quick enough on full tanks so that's what we are working on right now."
