INSTANT REPLAY Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford) made the Swift chassis’ CART debut an historic one when he drove it to victory in the 1997 season-opening Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami Presented by Toyota at the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex. Andretti led for 72 of the final 84 laps while finishing 3.401 seconds ahead of Paul Tracy (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) and claiming his CART-leading 36th career victory. Swift’s victory was the first for an American-made chassis since Gordon Johncock drove a Wildcat to the checkered flag at Atlanta on April 17, 1983. Tracy’s runner-up effort was his first podium appearance in 10 races while defending PPG Cup champion Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) finished third, his second podium performance at Homestead in as many years. Vasser’s teammate, Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda), tied a CART record with his fifth consecutive pole position and set another with his 10th consecutive front-row start during qualifying. He finished seventh.
