Homestead, Fl March 13, 1998 Christian Fittipaldi led the way during the first day of practice. He had a top speed of 212.164 mph during the morning session. Greg Moore, Bryan Herta, j. j. Lehto, and Jimmy Vasser round out the top five.

The morning session was run under clear sunny skies. There were no incidents as every driver was out feeling out the track and attempting to get up to speed.

In the first afternoon session No.16, Castro-Neves, made heavy impact with the turn four wall. He was transported to the CART Mobile Medical Facility and examined. He sustained a bruised right knee, and underwent therapy at the track. He is expected to race on Sunday. The car sustained major damage to its rear.

Near the end of the second session, Alex Barron made contact with the turn 4 wall. He exited the car under his own power. The car sustained minor damage

The Championship cars will continue practice on Saturday morning followed by qualifying at 1pm. CART instituted a new qualifying format at the end of last year. Qualifying order is determined by practice speeds. The slowest practice speed attempts to qualify first. The fastest qualifies last. The pole winner will be in doubt until the last car has run
