Herdez Competition Completes First Test of 2002
INDIANAPOLIS (January 11, 2002) January may be considered the "off-season" in motorsport, but with a scant two months until the season-opening event in Monterrey, Mexico, rookie Herdez Competition driver Mario Dom0x00ednguez and four other CART FedEx Championship Series competitors are already hot in pursuit of a competitive advantage.
Dom0x00ednguez, 26, today completed a two-day outing at Sebring International Raceway; his first in the 2002-specification Lola B2/00 chassis and his first since being announced as the team's driver in December, 2001. Herdez Competition continues to be powered by Ford-Cosworth engines and the car is shod with Bridgestone Potenza racing tires.
The team completed 120 miles on Thursday and added another 195 to the total today around this historic 3.70 mile road course in central Florida.
Although there is not official timing and scoring during these test sessions, today's sophisticated data acquisition software provides highly accurate lap times. Mario's best time (recorded Friday) was 51.55 seconds, placing him second among the five drivers attending.
Dom0x00ednguez was excited about the results. "I think the test went very well. I am quite happy with the new car and how it responded to the engineering changes that were made over the two days. The Herdez Competition engineering team knows exactly what to do and that makes my job much easier. I feel that Tom Brown (Chief Engineer) and I are really starting to communicate well too. I can see that we have a lot of room for improvement but I'm confident that, as we continue with our winter testing program, those improvements will come."
Managing director Keith Wiggins was satisfied with the test's results. "It was a good first test and provided us with a good 'shake down' of the new chassis. It's normal to spend a bit of time early on sorting out a few details which we did on Thursday. Once that was done though, I'd say we're quite happy with the car and Mario's performance. We learned a few things about the car and I'd say we're pleased with the enhancements Lola has made since last season. Mario didn't make any mistakes or have any major 'offs' so it was a successful two days overall." The team travels to Phoenix, Arizona next week to continue their pre-season preparations on the oval at Phoenix International Raceway and the Firebird East road course.
Noteworthy: CART will officially begin its new television partnership tomorrow (Saturday) with Fox's Speedvision, as the cable network will air an hour-long special dedicated to the excitement of the FedEx Championship Series. "CART On the Edge of Your Seat," a 60-minute inside look at the FedEx Championship Series produced by CART, will air on Speedvision at 5 p.m. ET Saturday. The broadcast is scheduled to re-air Monday at 9 p.m. ET and again Monday, Feb. 18 at 10 p.m. ET.
The special represents the network's first programming dedicated specifically to Champ Car racing since CART announced its new television agreement with the Fox Cable Networks Group and the CBS Television Network in mid-August.
