Herdez Competition completes first test of 2003 season.
INDIANAPOLIS (January 13, 2003) - Herdez Competition completed a three-day testing regimen last Friday at the 1.65 mile Sebring International Raceway in Florida with Roberto Moreno at the wheel. Moreno took over testing duties from 2002 CART Rookie of the Year Mario Dominguez, who continues to recuperate from shoulder surgery that took place in December. While unable to participate in driving duties, Dominguez attended the first two days of the test as a part of the team.
While Moreno completed three days of engine development work for Ford- Cosworth prior to Christmas, this was his first time in a current specification Champ car for some time and he was thrilled to be back. "For me, it's quite important to get back behind the wheel after a year away," Moreno said. "Despite all of my experience, it takes time to get used to being in the car. The work I did for Ford last year was really focused on working on the engine mapping - once that was right, I turned over the car to a group of Toyota Atlantic drivers and spend the balance of that test coaching them.
"So this was really my first time for awhile in a test focused on developing car set up. I really enjoyed the interaction with (chief engineer) Tom Brown and the other engineering staff and the chance to try out a current specification Lola chassis. I haven't been in a Lola chassis since the Homestead race in 1997 so that was an adjustment as well."
"We feel it was a good test overall," added Herdez Competition Managing Director Keith Wiggins. "We achieved all of our objectives during the test, which were primarily focused on evaluating the 2003 specification package and making sure were headed in the right direction from an engineering standpoint."
The team is still finalizing plans for the 2003 Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford season and hopes to soon announce the addition of a second full time entry for the first time in its history. The team's testing program will continue January 20th, when the team returns to Sebring with Dominguez at the helm.
