Round 8 of the CART FedEx Championship Series
Portland International Raceway
1.969-mile permanent road course
Qualifying Time: 58.938 seconds
Speed: 120.269 mph average
Jourdain had an encouraging final practice session this morning, completing a circuit of the almost-2-mile course in 58.319 seconds (121.545 mph), placing him 6th overall in that session.
However the afternoon's qualifying run did not go as smoothly. Jourdain's car was significantly damaged on the last timed lap of the Group One qualifying session when he made heavy left side contact with the tire barrier at the "carousel", the last set of turns prior to the pit straight. While the team is currently working to repair the car, it is anticipated that they will start the back up car in tomorrow's 98-lap event.
Michel Jourdain Jr.
"The car was just not the same as in this morning's practice. We have a lot of oversteer that we didn't have before and I don't know why. The oversteer made the car really hard to drive and I just couldn't keep it on the track. Once I got on the grass, the car skated all the way to the fence - there was no way to catch it."
