Herdez Competition Up to Speed at Champ Car's Fastest Venue
Indianapolis, IN -- (August 20, 2004) In preparation for the Upcoming Champ Car/NASCAR double-header at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 25th, the Herdez Competition duo of Mario Dominguez and Ryan Hunter-Reay turned their first laps on the 1.5 mile super speedway on Wednesday.
"As a team we completed over 300 trouble-fee miles at the super speedway. We worked through a progression of changes, both drivers gave informative feedback, the cars ran flawlessly and we walked away with better knowledge of what we need to be fast when we return to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in September," said Team Manager, Vince Kremer. "Now we will to go home and get to work, we will spend a lot of time between now and the race optimizing our cars for the track, the warm conditions and our longest and fastest event of the year."
Herdez Competition's Ryan Hunter-Reay broke the Champ Car records with his win on the series only other oval race earlier this season at the Milwaukee Mile. The Las Vegas 350 will be his second super speedway event; he finished ninth at the Euro Speedway in Germany during his rookie campaign in 2003. "It was fun to be back on a super speedway and I am looking forward to the event, Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a fantastic facility and the city is a perfect fit for Champ Car. We had a successful test and found a good starting point for our return for the race. We were the quickest car without a draft most of the day and were turning times that were quicker than others were turning in the draft." Hunter-Reay continued, "We worked on the handling of the car in traffic and I left feeling confident for the race."
Coming off a strong weekend in Denver, Mario Dominguez looks forward to another super speedway race after, he and Sebastien Bourdais had one of the closest finishes in Champ Car history last year at the Euro Speedway. Dominguez left the test satisfied with the day's accomplishments and optimistic for the 350-lap event, "we tested everything on our plan. Based upon all of the information we acquired, I think that when we return we will have a very fast car." Dominguez completed just over 100 laps or 150 miles and registered the seventh fastest time of the day, "it is very easy, flat-out all the way around. The trick is trimming out the downforce. The facility is fantastic and the fans are going to get an incredible show."
The Herdez Competition crew has returned to their Indianapolis headquarters to prepare for Champ Car's return to Canada and round 10 of the 2004 Champ Car World Series at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec next week, August 27-29th.
