(Houston, TX - February 11, 1998) Ticket info for the CART Texaco GP of Houston to be held October 2-4, 1998, is finally being sent to people on the organizer's mailing list.
In case you haven't recieved any info yet, the priciest tickets are for the pit row grandstands at $150 for the weekend. These are the only tickets that include paddock/garage access, for those not purchasing pit row grandstands, paddock/garage access is an additional $30.
A visit to the circuit's downtown site proved that, in most cases, seats in the grandstands have got to be at least 15 feet in the air to be able to clear the trees that line sections of the course. A race spokesperson said that some trees would be trimmed and others removed in order to increase site lines. This also made it a little difficult for me to get a really good grasp of how far you can see, but here goes a quick review. (All grandstands on inside of track, with cars traveling right to left, unless otherwise noted.)
Grandstand A (final turn) - See cars enter pit straight and run past entrance to pits. One story building on corner may block view of cars as they enter the final turn.
"Executive Village Suites" (no Grandstand B listed) - Dead center of pit straight. No information available on these areas at this time.
C (faces pit straight at T1) - See back down pit straight and through turn one.
D (faces Walker at T1) - See cars exit turn one, blast through left hand sweeper to turn two, a right hand hairpin.
E (faces Walker between T1 & T2) - Should be able to see cars from turn one, through sweeper and turn two hairpin. May be able to see over some trees, located on the inside of the hairpin, to watch cars run down Crawford, away from turn two.
F (faces T2 at entrance) - See cars through sweeper (from right) and turn two and away down Crawford (also to right). Might be able to see down to turn three left at Capitol.
G (faces Crawford at T2) - May see cars exit turn one if you're lucky enough to get seats up high enough in this stand. Watch them through sweeper (straight at you) and turn two and off down Crawford (to left). Might be able to see down to turn three left at Capitol (one story building may obscure corner).
H (faces Crawford) - Cars exit turn two and run past toward turn three.
I (faces Crawford on outside near T3) - Cars run left to right from turn two to turn three, where they turn left and away this position. You won't see cars run up Capitol as there is a building on the inside of the corner blocking view. If you're in top row and on far left side of bleachers, you may be able to turn your head and see back into sweeper.
J, K, L (face Austin) - Cars blast past on fastest straight. Accelerating at J & K, probably near terminal velocity at L. I think there are enough buildings to block view of corners at either end of straight. Best thing about L is that late in the day it may be in the shadow of "The Park" shopping center, so the sun won't be beating down on you.
M (faces Austin at T5) - How good M is will depend on how high you are able to sit, as there are one story buildings blocking the view on either side. Might be able to see cars go away from you down Clay after tuen five if you are in the upper-left corner of bleachers.
N - No grandstand N listed. This could fit in with story in local paper about not knowing where one grandstand will go because of hotel that is to be built.
O (faces La Branch at T7) - There are some trees in the way, but you should be able to see the cars turn left at turn six from Clay onto LaBranch, come by you, and make sharp right at turn seven onto Lamar. Lamar becomes a right hand sweeper and may be visible over trees if you're high enough. (Note: L & O are back-to-back).
General Admission Viewing - There is a really nice park in the block surrounded by Austin, Lamar, LaBranch, and McKinney. Watch cars blast by on Austin to the west or watch cars come towards you on Labranch, turn right at turn seven, and go away on sweeper to the south-east. There is another park outside the course on Clay between Austin and LaBranch. You will see cars from turn five through turn six.
People already on the organizer's mailing list have until February 20 to make advance ticket purchases. After that date, tickets go on sale to general public. For info or to order tickets call 713-739-RACE. MC, Visa, Discover and Amex accepted.
