Homestead, FL March 13, 1998, the Ariecro-Wells team announced today that Robby Gordon would replace the retiring Hiro Matsusita. Hiro will remain in the car through the race in Rio. Gordon's first time in #24 Toyota powered Reynard will be at Nazareth.

Matsushita who announced his retirement on Wednesday, says he feels he can give 100% through the race in Rio, but that he was unsure how much longer he could sustain his commitment. It was decided to let Gordon have the ride at Nazareth. Gordon says this is a good track for him to come back to Championship racing.

Gordon says he has learned a great deal about the team workings while he has been testing during the winter. When questioned about his impatience as a driver, he answered "I hope that my impatience will help the team and Toyota to speed their engine development"

In picking Gordon as his replacemet, Matsushita said that he felt like Robbie was the best person for the job. Matsushita will move to the team's Atlantic group in a management position.

When asked if Hiro would be seen in a race car again, he smiled and said, "I am only retiring from the Championship cars" He did not rule out a ride in sports car racing.

IN a later news conference, Max Papis when asked how he and Gordon got along, said, "I don't know him, so I can't say. He brings a lot of experience to the team, I hope that helps him when I kick his ass (ON THE TRACK)"
