Surfers Paradise, AUS (October 15, 1998) - FedEx Championship Series champion Alex Zanardi set a torrid pace Friday morning during the opening practice round for Sunday's Honda Indy at Surfers Paradise, Australia (8:30 p.m. ET, tape delay, ESPN).

Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) averaged 106.320 miles per hour (1 minute, 35.265 seconds) on his fastest lap of the 2.795-mile temporary street circuit, located on Australia's Gold Coast. His time eclipsed the track record of 106.053 mph (1:34.877) set by Nigel Mansell in 1994, although official track records can only be set during qualifying or the race.

Defending Honda Indy champion Scott Pruett (Visteon Reynard Ford) was second-fastest Friday at 106.149 mph (1:34.791) followed by Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) at 105.687 mph (1:35.206). Pruett has finished third, second and first, respectively, in his past three starts at Australia. Moore has finished third and second, respectively, in his two career appearances at Surfers Paradise, in 1996 and last year.

Rounding out the top five were Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda), at 105.646 mph (1:35.206) and Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart Swift Ford) at 105.567 mph (1:35.314).

Provisional qualifying begins at 12:30 a.m. ET.
