Review of 1997 Race:

Scott Pruett (Brahma Reynard Ford) earned his second FedEx Championship Series career victory at the 1997 Sunbelt IndyCarnival Australia, finishing 0.684 seconds ahead of Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) in a race which featured seven full-course caution flags and a complete restart following a second-lap accident in which Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart/Budweiser Swift Ford) sustained a broken right leg.

Before a record crowd of 91,664, Pruett averaged 78.948 miles per hour and led the final 16 lap of the 57-lap event, which was shortened from its originally scheduled 65-lap distance due to the length of the caution periods. Pruett recorded the victory in Brahma Sports Team teammate Raul Boesel's (Brahma Reynard Ford) secondary car, after Pruett's primary car sustained engine problems prior to qualifying.

Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford) finished third while Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda), who established a FedEx Championship Series record during qualifying by winning his sixth consecutive pole position, finished fourth. Andretti exited the event with 35 PPG Cup points and the series lead, followed by Pruett (30) and Moore (28).
