Gil de Ferran Throws Out First Pitch

In Marlins' Victory Over Giants

MIAMI (August 10, 1999) -- Championship Car driver Gil de Ferran got the Florida Marlins off to a strong start on Tuesday, Aug. 10, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch in the Marlins' 8-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Pro Player Stadium.

Picking up a baseball for "the second time in my life," the CART FedEx Championship Series driver of Walker Racing's Valvoline Reynard/Honda had some pre-game encouragement from Giants' coach John Yandle, and then fired a strike to open the contest.

"I think it was great, " said de Ferran. "It's a big honor to be here throwing the first pitch. My family enjoyed the experience, which made it an even better experience. It was quite an exciting game."

The 31-year-old driver recently captured his third career victory at Portland, Oregon, and won pole positions at Japan and Toronto. He also posted runner-up finishes at Japan and Cleveland, and finished third at Milwaukee.

DeFerran won 1995 CART Rookie of the Year honors with a spectacular late-season charge, with his victory at Laguna Seca, Calif., helping him edge Christian Fittipaldi by only two points.

De Ferran attended the game with his wife, Angela, daughter Anna Elizabeth (4) and son Luke (2).
