Gil de Ferran to Throw Out First Pitch At August 10 Marlins-Giants Contest

MIAMI (August 4, 1999) -- Championship Car driver Gil de Ferran will hang up his helmet on Tuesday, Aug. 10, and take to the pitcher's mound at Pro Player Stadium to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the game featuring the Florida Marlins against the San Francisco Giants.

De Ferran isn't considering a change of careers, though. It will be an enjoyable change of pace from racing the 240-mile per hour CART FedEx Championship Series cars, where the Brazilian native and Fort Lauderdale resident is enjoying his best season.

"I'm excited and a little nervous," de Ferran admitted. "I just hope my pitch won't hit the batsman."

The 31-year-old driver recently captured his third career victory at Portland, Oregon, and won pole positions at Japan and Toronto. He also posted runner-up finishes at Japan and Cleveland, and finished third at Milwaukee.

DeFerran won 1995 CART Rookie of the Year honors with a spectacular late-season charge, with his victory at Laguna Seca, Calif., helping him edge Christian Fittipaldi by only two points.

"Growing up in Brazil, pitching is something I'm not proficient at. Since I' ve moved to the United States, I've become more familiar with baseball, and I've actually gone to a few games and taken a liking to the sport."

De Ferran will attend the game with his wife, Angela, daughter Anna Elizabeth (4) and son Luke (2).
