Three Drivers Log Over 500 Miles in Goodyear Test at Gateway

Madison, IL (April 16, 1998) -- FedEx Championship Series drivers Christian Fittipaldi, Andre Ribeiro and PJ Jones combined to do over 500 miles of testing Thursday during a Goodyear tire test at Gateway International Raceway outside St. Louis.

Fittipaldi (Kmart Swift Ford) and Ribeiro (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) posted comparable times of 25.9 seconds on their fastest trips around the 1.27-mile oval. Those unofficial times translate to lap speeds in the mid-170 mph range.

Jones' (Castrol-Degree Reynard Toyota) fastest lap was 26.8 seconds. As on the opening day of the test Wednesday, drivers dodged raindrops throughout the day.

"The car is smooth around the course and I'm very happy," said Ribeiro. "We did a 55 lap run, and we were very happy with everything. The tires never went away. Goodyear improves with each test."

"The car is much better than when we tested here in September," Fittipaldi said. "We got some good runs in and made improvements throughout the day. Goodyear has done a nice job with the tires and is doing well. Just look at [teammate] Michael's [Andretti] win at Nazareth."

Testing continues Friday with three different drivers, including Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford), Al Unser Jr. (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) and Alex Barron (Castrol-Degree Reynard Toyota).
