<pre> PRACTICE TIMES - Friday, September 15, 2000 Driver Lap Time Speed 1. Max Papis 25.859-sec. 176.805 mph 2. Juan Montoya 25.869-sec. 176.737 mph 3. Helio Castroneves 25.965-sec. 176.083 mph 4. Tony Kanaan 25.995-sec. 175.880 mph 5. Kenny Brack 26.027-sec. 175.853 mph
<pre> A beautiful late summer day greeted Team Rahal and the rest of the CART FedEx Championship Series at the Gateway International Raceway in suburban St. Louis. Max Papis and Kenny Brack both rolled their Ford-Cosworth/Reynard's off the truck with a fast set-up. Papis posted the fastest lap of the first practice day in the morning session with an effort of 25.859-sec./176.805 mph in his Miller Lite car. Kenny Brack cracked the top-ten with a lap of 26.399-sec./173.188 mph the ninth fastest time of the session in the Shell car.
Papis and Brack focused on their race set-up in the afternoon, as did most the CART field. The full tank runs and used tires resulted in slower times in the afternoon. In fact no CART competitor managed to top Papis' time from the morning. Brack did improve on his lap time as he posted a lap of 25.999-sec./175.853 mph, which moved him into the top-five for the day with the fifth fastest lap of the day.
#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard
"This is a unique place. It is pretty bumpy when you compare it to the other ovals, but that sometimes can help you with the grip. We didn't get much testing in here a few weeks ago because of rain, but what we did learn in those 50 laps has helped us a lot today. We are familiar with what we have here at St. Louis since we ran the same wing package at Homestead where we won and Japan where Kenny was on the outside of the front row. That has helped us find the right set-up quickly."
#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard
"Gateway is an interesting track, kind of a combination of Phoenix (international Raceway) and Japan (Twin Ring Motegi). It is a new track for me; but then again almost all of the tracks this year have been new to me. I didn't test here and there was some catching up today during the first session. A top-five time is nice but we need to be faster because there won't be a lot of passing on Sunday."
