CHAMPCAR/CART: Gateway Mo Nunn Racing pre-race notes and quotes

#55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard
Pre-Race Notes/Quotes –Sept. 15-17, 2000
At Gateway International Raceway – Madison, Ill. (1.27-mile oval)
Round 17 of 20 on the 2000 CART FedEx Championship Series

“It will be refreshing to get back onto a small oval this weekend. We’ve suffered our share of hard knocks during this past stretch of road courses. The Gateway oval is a good bit different than the mile ovals at Nazareth, Milwaukee and Chicago. It’s a quarter-mile longer, and it has four distinct corners. It’ll be a bit tougher to get the most out of the setup and the car. But we’re working for one of the best in the business in Mo Nunn. So I think we’ll have a good solution to getting around this track. Mo has won here, and has qualified on the pole. Let’s hope we can pull some more of that magic here in the shadows of the great Arch!”

-- This is Kanaan’s third visit to Gateway in a Champ Car, his first with first-year Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing. He qualified third here in his Rookie of the Year season in 1998 with Tasman Motorsports, and finished seventh here last year with Forsythe Championship Racing.

-- In his Dayton Indy Lights championship season of 1997, Kanaan finished 10th here.

-- At Laguna Seca last weekend, Kanaan qualified 12th and retired three-quarters of the way through the race with brake problems, placing 22nd.

-- In his last oval appearance, at Chicago the last weekend in July, Kanaan qualified a season-high third.

-- Team owner Morris Nunn was technical director at Target/Chip Ganassi Racing during the last four CART championship runs by Jimmy Vasser (1996), Alex Zanardi (1997-98) and Juan Montoya (1999). He won here with Zanardi in 1998, and qualified on the pole with Montoya here last year.
