FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES - QUALIFYING

Friday, May 28, 1999 - Motorola 300 - Gateway International Raceway ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford - Qualified 7th - "Hopefully we will be in the top three or four rows for the start tomorrow. It's going to be key because it is going to be very tough to pass. A good starting position is going to be key." WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE DURING THE RACE TOMORROW? "Hopefully we will have a good race car. This is the same car we ran in Japan so with any luck the results can be the same."

P.J. JONES -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 16th - "I could have done a lot better. The car was a bit pushy going into turn three. We seem to have a good race car but we need to work a bit on our qualifying setup. HOW MUCH OF A FACTOR IS THE BUMP IN TURN THREE? "We have been working on that all weekend but it does not seem to bother me that much."

MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- K Mart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 11th - "We just have not had any luck in setting up the car for qualifying this year. We do a good job for the race but not qualifying strong makes our job come race day much harder. That's what happened to us in Nazareth. I think we had the strongest car on race day but starting 13th there killed us."

CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big K Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 8th - YOU ARE OFF TO A VERY STRONG START TO THE SEASON AND YOU TURNED IN ANOTHER SOLID QUALIFYING RUN TODAY . . . "We had a good run today and I am pretty happy with where we ended up. We are definitely going to keep it up and I am sure we are going to be in the hunt for the championship. Tomorrow for the race I am confident that we will be racing up front." YOU SEEM TO BE MUCH MORE CONFIDENT IN THE CAR AND WITH THE CAR THIS YEAR THAT IN THE PAST. WHAT HAS CHANGED? "The team has improved a lot and that is one area that you need to be working to have success. As for me, in '97 I had the accident (in Australia) with my leg and in '98 it was a bunch of little things that kept us out of it for a while. But you could see towards the end of the year the team was coming on."

MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 13th - "We went to cure the understeer that the car had but we went a bit too far. We were expecting a lot more but in racing you are going to have some days like this."

BRYAN HERTA -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 17th - "The car was not very good. We have struggled a bit this weekend with the understeer and the car really pushed on us during the qualifying run and I just couldn't get any more speed out of it. We still have some work to do and we plan on trying some things out tonight." LOOKING FORWARD TO THE RACE TOMORROW, IS PASSING GOING TO BE DIFFICULT? "It's going to be really difficult. You have to set up the car so if a guy makes a mistake or goes off a little you can (pass there), but it's going to be tough among the competitive cars to make passes."

MICHEL JOURDAIN, JR. -19- Herdez/Viva Mexico Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 22nd - "We had a little problem with the setup today but we need to keep working on it. I think it is going to be a good race for us tomorrow. We have to stay patient and come up with a good strategy for the race and we can improve tomorrow."
