Wheaties Honors Target/Chip Ganassi Racing For Back-To-Back Championships
(June 7, 1998) -- Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, which became the first team in 10 years to win back-to-back Championship Auto Racing Teams titles, has become the first Champ Car team to appear on a Wheaties box.
Drivers Jimmy Vasser (1996 champion) and Alex Zanardi (1997 champion) appear on the special, limited-edition Wheaties box that was unveiled today in Detroit, where the team is preparing for Sunday's ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix, Round 8 in the 19-race FedEx Championship Series. The 18-ounce box will be sold in Target stores nationwide.
"The 'Breakfast of Champions' is proud to commemorate Target/Chip Ganassi Racing's impressive accomplishment," said Bart Reed, Wheaties marketing manager. "Jimmy and Alex are champions on and off the track. "
Vasser claimed the PPG Cup in 1996 in just his third season as a Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) driver. He won four of the series' 16 races, including the inaugural U.S. 500. Zanardi, who claimed the rookie of the year award in 1996, won the 1997 PPG Cup after claiming five checkered flags, four pole positions and leading the series with 338 laps led. Zanardi and Vasser currently rank first and third, respectively, in the 1998 FedEx Championship Series, having won two races each.
"This is a tremendous honor," said Vasser, "and one that I could never have imagined as a child. There have been some great athletes and champions and championship teams recognized by Wheaties over the years, so I'm honored just to be in the same company as those people. Wheaties is really a part of Americana, and we're just proud to be a part of that great tradition." "Coming from Italy, I was not as familiar with Wheaties as people in the United States," Zanardi said. "Since we found out we were going to be honored by being on a box, I really have come to understand what an honor this is. People tell me, 'Now that you're on a Wheaties box, you've truly made it!' I'd like to thank General Mills for honoring the team, and obviously I'd like to thank everyone on the Target/Chip Ganassi team for helping us win these championships."
"The whole Target/Chip Ganassi team made the consecutive championships possible," said team owner Chip Ganassi. "We're thrilled to represent our sport by being a part of the Wheaties tradition." The commemorative Wheaties boxes are expected to be in stores by mid-June.
Wheaties and "The Breakfast of Champions" are Reg. T.M.s of General Mills, Inc.
