Monterey, California (September 8, 2000) -- Dario Franchitti of Team KOOL Green clocked the third fastest lap and teammate Paul Tracy was tenth in today's provisional qualifying session at Laguna Seca Raceway. Tracy recorded a quick lap of 1:08.898, an average speed of 116.938 mph.
Fellow Honda drivers Helio Castroneves and Gil de Ferran occupy the front row. Castroneves holds the provisional pole with a best lap of 1:07.722 (118.969 mph), while de Ferran, his teammate at Team Penske, set a fast lap of 1:07.823 (118.792 mph).
The CART FedEx Championship Series drivers have a final practice session Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. -- 11:15 a.m. Final qualifying is scheduled to begin at 1:45 p.m., when Franchitti will be aiming for his third consecutive pole position of the season. (All times are Pacific Daylight Time.)
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA-REYNARD:
(10th with a lap-time of 1:08.898 seconds / 116.938 mph)
"I didn't get the most out of my second set of tires and I got held up a little bit on my fastest lap. That's all it takes to put you tenth. The KOOL car is actually quite good. We've still got some work to do for tomorrow, but we'll sit down and look at the data and come up with some things to try for tomorrow."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA-REYNARD:
(3rd with a lap-time of 1:08.148 seconds / 118.225 mph)
"I was pleasantly surprised with where we ended up today. We didn't have the best test when we were here a few weeks ago, so to be third today is pretty good. We've got a bit of work to do to get the car better. It isn't bad, but I'll get together with the Team KOOL Green engineers this evening and see what we can do to improve it for tomorrow."
