CART Online (February 19, 1998) -- Team KOOL Green driver Dario Franchitti completed a successful test on the East Course at Firebird International Raceway Sunday and Monday. Franchitti completed 166 laps during the two days of testing on Firebirdtime of 42.9 seconds on his fastest lap of the track.

"It was good to get back on a road course," said Franchitti, a second-year driver whose first CART career pole position came on a temporary road course at Toronto last year. "From a technical standpoint, we're developing the new HRK engine for the start of the season, and the performance just gets better with each test."

The test went virtually trouble-free, with only a minor incident on Sunday, when Franchitti slid off track and ended up in a pool of standing water from recent rains in the Phoenix area. The car was undamaged, although the crew spent an hour cleaning it before resuming the test.

"The more I work with Dario, the more I enjoy it," said technical director and race engineer Don Halliday. "Hecalm and very straightforward. He immediately took the blame for going off, saying he missed a shift. But it goes to show the kind of guy he is. There Team KOOL Green continues its preseason testing program today and Thursday, with Franchitti being joined by teammate Paul Tracy for two days on the 1.3-mile road course at California Speedway.
