Fontana, Calif. - (October 30, 2000) - Dario Franchitti's day and season ended with a mechanical failure just five laps after the Team KOOL Green driver took the green flag in today's restart of the rain-delayed CART season finale at the California Speedway.

The race was stopped yesterday after just 33 of the scheduled 250 laps when rain began falling on the 2-mile superspeeday. When the race was halted on Sunday, Juan Montoya was leading and Franchitti was running second. (TKG's Paul Tracy's race had already ended with a mechanical failure on lap 23.)

The race was restarted this morning at 10:10 a.m. (PST) with the 23-car field circling the track behind the pace car for six laps to warm up tires and engines, before taking the green flag at the beginning of lap 40.

Christian Fittipaldi took the race victory - and the $1 million prize for winning the race, with Roberto Moreno and Gil de Ferran finishing second and third. Only six cars were running at the end of the race.

With his third-place finish, de Ferran clinched his first CART championship with 168 points. Adrian Fernandez finished fifth in today's race and takes second in the championship with 158 points. Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy ends the season in fifth place with 134 points, while Franchitti finished with 92 points and 13th place in the points.

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 7th / Finished 23 rd / 13th in final point standings with 92)
"Everything seemed fine. We were sitting behind the leaders, just cruising along. I didn't want to lead the race; I wanted to take it easy and get good fuel mileage running behind someone else. Then the engine just started to go off as I was going into turn one (beginning of lap 45). It kind of sums up the season. The KOOL car was absolutely awesome - it was awesome yesterday and it was awesome today - which makes it all the more frustrating. Hopefully we got rid of all our bad luck this year and we can get back up on top next year."
