LA CAÑADA, Calif. -- Homestead High School senior Xijia Chen of Cupertino, Calif. Was selected today as the recipient of the fourth annual Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship. The scholarship will award $10,000 to Ms. Chen for tuition and expenses to the college of her choice. Chen plans to attend either Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), or Harvard University to study for a medical career.

Tracy Krosnoff, wife of the late Jeff Krosnoff, will present the scholarship to Xijia Chen at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Charity Ball on Wednesday, April 12, 2000.

"Through the scholarship we are able to make a contribution toward the bright future of a deserving student in Jeff's name," Tracy Krosnoff said. "Our hope is that the recipient will become a positive force and inspiration for others just as Jeff was."

Chen's essay, titled "My Mother's Gift," was selected from more than 1300 students who applied for the 2000 Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship. Applicants for the scholarship were required to submit an essay on: The person in this century whose actions serve as the greatest role model for your future and why. Students were also required to be a senior at a California high school, maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0, and display outstanding community citizenship.

The scholarship was established in memory of race-car driver Jeff Krosnoff, who was tragically killed in a racing accident in 1996. This year marks the fourth of what will be an annual award given out to a deserving California high school senior who shows the same spirit and enthusiasm for life that Jeff showed every day.

The Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship is a reality due to the generous contributions made by the following companies: Bridgestone/Firestone Trust Fund, California Speedway/Penske Automotive Group, Championship Auto Racing Teams, Grand Prix Foundation of Long Beach, MCI WorldCom, Molstar Sports and Entertainment, OCC Sports, Pfanner Communications, Precision Preparation Inc., Toyota Motor Sales USA, and Valvoline.
