In just 28 days time the CART FedEx World Series will take to the track at Rockingham Motor Speedway for the first ever Champ Car round to be held in the UK on a banked oval circuit. With speeds in excess of over 200 mph, these powerful single seaters will battle wheel to wheel for a distance of 500 kilometres in the fastest race ever held in Great Britain.
Champ Cars boasts a truly international field of drivers, with ten Brazilians, four Americans, three Canadians, two Mexicans, two Italians, two Japanese, one Swede, one Spaniard, one Briton and one New Zealander. Drivers include Michael Andretti, Christian Fittipaldi, Alex Zanardi, Tora Takagi and Roberto Moreno. Most of the 27 drivers that will make the trip to Europe have driven for British teams at some stage in their distinguished careers and are looking forward to coming back to what they regard as their second home.
British interest on September 22nd will centre around Dario Franchitti who, despite his Italian name, hails from Edinburgh. Dario is a leading contender for the 2001 drivers crown, a position he is familiar with after tying on points with current Williams Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya in 1999, only to lose the title to the Columbian when race wins were taken into consideration. Already a race winner this season, Dario is looking forward to racing in front of a British crowd for the first time in many years. He has made several visits to Rockingham showing a keen interest in the building of the circuit and earlier this month he met the British press to give them a drivers eye view of what to expect when the series hits these shores in September.
Rockingham Motor Speedway is unique in British motor sport as the only track with a 52,000 all seater capacity and the only circuit where the entire track is visible from almost every seat. So this means that every visitor to the UK's newest motor racing venue is guaranteed a fantastic view of the race, a seat in one of the five grandstands and facilities unbeatable by any other circuit in Great Britain.
Race day is going to one that every visitor will not forget for a long time with a mouth watering support package to make the day complete. There will be a race by the ASCAR Racing Series, aerial displays by The Blue Eagle, The Red Devils, a Tornado from RAF Lossiemouth and, to add that American flavour, a fly past by an F-15. On track there will a stunt display by two wheeled ace Craig Jones and demonstrations by the Legends race series. The fun doesn't stop when the racing is over and the champagne has been sprayed. An after race party led by Andy Cato of Groove Armada and Daddy G of Massive Attack, who will be performing from a giant stage that will be rolled onto the track.
Rockingham will be THE PLACE to be seen on September 22nd, make sure you have booked your seat.
The inaugural UK round of the CART FedEx Championship Series will be held at Rockingham Motor Speedway on September 20th to 22nd. 24 Hour Ticket Hotline - 0870 013 4044. Tickets from £25.00.
