Success at MIS: A native of Warren, Michigan, Herta's past at Michigan International Speedway is full of top ten starts and finishes. The 2001 Michigan 500 will mark the young American's seventh start at the superspeedway. In his six previous starts at MIS, Herta has started in the top five six times and finished in the top ten four times, including three straight top five finishes. Herta's best start at the speedway came at the US 500 in 1996 (third) and his top finish came the same year at the Michigan 500 when he finished second, his second Champ Car podium appearance.

Running Up Front: Herta and the Forsythe Championship Racing Team were running up front again last weekend in Toronto. Herta was running fifth, up ten positions from where he started, but suffered an electrical failure, ending his day on lap 67. Toronto was the third straight race where Herta ran in the top five, and his sixth race of the 2001 season where he ran in the top ten. Herta's best finish of the season to date came in Cleveland where he finished third, his first podium visit of the 2001 Champ Car season.

Oval Momentum: Famous for his success on natural road courses such as Laguna Seca and Mid-Ohio, Herta has a rich history of success on the ovals. Herta earned his first Champ Car pole position in 1995 at Phoenix International Raceway, where he set the existing track record. Herta earned a podium finish in just his second appearance at MIS (Mich. 500, 1996) and finished ninth at his inaugural visit to the Brickyard in the 1994 Indy 500. Herta has a total of 20 top ten oval starts and 14 top ten oval finishes. Look for this momentum to continue at the 2001 Michigan 500.

Herta on Michigan:

"Finishing the race is our number one goal, we want to focus on reliability and making sure we are there at the end of the 500 miles. I have a great oval car, we have qualified really well all year on the ovals, as long as we are there at the end, we will be in good shape. Michigan is a great track, I have had some pretty good results there and we tested for CART there a couple of months ago, so I know we are prepared, and I am looking forward to it."
