Ford-Cosworth drivers took four of the top 10 spots in today's second round of qualifying for Sunday's Freightliner/G.I. Joe's 200 CART FedEx Championship event at Portland International Raceway.
Visteon Ford driver Roberto Moreno qualified third, his best qualifying position this year, and his best yet at Portland.
ADRIAN FERNANDEZ - Tecate/Quaker State Ford-Cosworth - FASTEST IN FIRST SESSION, 10TH OVERALL -
"Yesterday, we had the NASCAR guys before our session and we lost like a second and two-tenths from the morning session. This time, I knew I just had to concentrate for one lap for the conditions of the track. The track was a little slippery and you have to have everything perfect for one lap. I was so happy to see that time, especially considering what happened yesterday."
PORTLAND TRACK - HANDLING OR HORSEPOWER?
"It's both. You have to be able to put the power down here. But it doesn't matter how much horsepower you have here if you can't put it to the ground. It's a combination of both, really, here. You need the power, but if you have a good, balanced chassis you're going to be able to take advantage of this course."
PATRICK CARPENTIER - Team Player's Ford-Cosworth - QUALIFIED 12TH, MISSED MORNING PRACTICE DUE TO A BROKEN OIL HOSE -
"It was good, but we missed the morning session, so we're paying for it a little bit this afternoon. We made a change in the car and it made it harder to drive, and at the same time I didn't really get a chance to lap with my second set of tires since I was stuck with Juan (MONTOYA) and we were locking each other up, so I just couldn't do it. I feel pretty good about tomorrow. I think we're going to have a good car. We'll make some changes and the car should be better."
MICHAEL ANDRETTI - Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - QUALIFIED 11TH --
"The car is sliding around all over the place. The track was fine ... other guys went quick. We're just slow right now."
PORTLAND TRACK - HORSEPOWER OR HANDLING?
"Both. On a road course, handling is the most important thing. But for passing, you have to have good horsepower. So it's both."
CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI - Big Kmart/Route 66 Ford-Cosworth - QUALIFIED 6TH -
"The track was a little different than yesterday, but no problems. The engine ran trouble-free. It's just tough right now because we don't have a very good balance. We thought we were good yesterday, I think we're better than the last race, but we want to bump ourselves up there a little more."
ROBERTO MORENO - Visteon Ford-Cosworth - QUALIFIED THIRD -
"We had a very, very slow start. We came here with some ideas and we played with the car a lot. If you saw us yesterday morning, you'd think we weren't going to qualifying well because we were trying new things in the car and trying new stuff. We had a pretty good car by the end of yesterday, and this morning, I went out with a better package, and our engine had a little water problem. We had to stop that car, and go to the spare car. W e used what we got from that car into my race car, which the crew changed the engine in a fantastic one hour. We didn't even have to do an installation lap, they do such a good job. We also took advantage of some things that Adrian (FERNANDEZ, HIS TEAMMATE) learned in the first session, and with my second set of tires I went quite well. I'm extremely happy with the Visteon guys. They worked hard and they worked really well."
DIFFERENCE IN TRACK FROM FRIDAY:
"You just had to look at the tires. Yesterday, when we came in the pits, there was a lot of pick-up. This morning, when you looked at the tires, they looked clean."
KEY TO RACE SUNDAY:
"Get through the first lap. On any road course, or street course, you have to be there at the end. The old saying, 'To finish first, first you have to finish.' It's going to be hard race for sure. It's hard on equipment. I think strategy will play a good role here. My team is quite good at that, so I'm going to rely on my guys tomorrow for that.
KENNY BRACK - Shell Ford-Cosworth - QUALIFIED FIFTH -
"We made progress. We came up a little short, but I think we're pretty good. We'll make some tweaks. We made some good gains in that last set of tires. I think we finally found what we should be aiming for here. I think we're okay for tomorrow."
ALEX TAGLIANI - Team Player's Ford - QUALIFIED 16TH - "We had a fairly good session this morning and the track was much better than yesterday's qualifying. The team made some changes to the car last night after we shared data with Patrick's team. The Player's team did a good job setting up with car for this afternoon's qualification, but unfortunately we had an oil leak not long after the start and I had to serve an eight-minute penalty. I went out with the backup car with only four minutes left and I managed a decent time considering the fact that it was my first time out on the track with it and that it did not have proper shocks and springs. We also had to use sticker tires and it's hard to get them up to temperature in only four laps. The Player's team will get the proper set up on the back-up car and I'm more than ready for the race."
