MAX PAPIS FASTEST DURING AFTERNOON PRACTICE AT NAZARETH
PAPIS POSTS SECOND-FASTEST TIME OF THE DAY AT NAZARETH
Team Rahal driver Max Papis was the second-fastest driver on the track at Nazareth Speedway on Friday, lapping the 0.946-mile tri-oval in 20.653 seconds (164.896 mph) during the afternoon practice session. Rookie Bruno Junqueira established the day's fastest time during the morning practice session with a lap of 20.485 seconds (166.248 seconds). Papis' teammate, Kenny Brack, was the second fastest driver in the afternoon with a lap of 20.692 seconds (164.585 mph), followed by Helio Castroneves (20.773 seconds; 163.944 mph), Gil de Ferran (20.882 seconds; 163.088 mph) and Paul Tracy (20.941 seconds; 162.628 mph).
GUGELMIN WITHDRAWS FROM NAZARETH FOLLOWING LOSS OF HIS SON
PacWest Racing Group announced the official withdrawal of Mauricio Gugelmin from this weekend Lehigh Valley Grand Prix due to the death one of his children. Six-year old Giuliano, who was born 27 minutes after twin brother Bernardo, succumbed to respiratory difficulties early Thursday morning after complications at birth left him a quadriplegic and with a form of cerebral palsy. Out of respect for Mauricio and his family, PacWest has withdrawn the #17 car from competition this weekend in Nazareth.
MAX PAPIS (#7 Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth) - Fastest during the afternoon practice -
"We concentrated a lot on long runs today. We gave it a shot a couple of times to go fast and we did a good job of it because the car was fast. We are expecting different things from the car tomorrow because it's going to be cooler, so we'll have to dial in a little more front downforce to adjust. Ford-Cosworth is doing a fantastic job, and we are very pleased with all the effort that they have been putting into the program over the last three or four months. Unfortunately the result didn't prove just how good we are, but we are close."
KENNY BRACK (#8 Shell Ford-Cosworth) - Second fastest during the afternoon practice -
"We've had an up and down day. It was very hot this afternoon so we had to change the car a little bit to accommodate for that, but we worked mostly on stuff for the race and we feel pretty good." WILL THE ANTICIPATED
DROP IN TEMPERATURE AFFECT THINGS?
"It'll affect it a little bit, but we ran in cooler conditions this morning and now it's a little hotter so we'll have to see what it does tomorrow."
ALEX TAGLIANI (#33 Player's/Forsythe Ford-Cosworth) -
"We had a very fast car at the end, but a connector came loose on the popoff valve and we lost a bunch of power. We didn't have a chance to show the speed of the car, but I think we'll be fast tomorrow."
WHAT WERE YOU WORKING ON TODAY?
"Qualifying setup and our suspension set up. We came here with a suspension set up that was not good for the track and got surprised, so we had to turn around and start working on other things. It worked out for us on the car, especially, but we were expecting to go much faster with new tires but we didn't expect to have that problem at the same time. It's unfortunate, but we'll just have to wait another day and look forward to tomorrow."
CAN YOU STILL USE WHAT YOU WORKED ON TODAY DESPITE THE EXPECTED CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE?
"Yeah, but we need to keep in mind that we'll have to use more downforce because the track is going to be faster. We're going to have to pick it up and be able to adjust to the track's conditions as best we can."
PATRICK CARPENTIER (#32 Player's/Forsythe Ford-Cosworth) - 10th fastest in the afternoon practice -
"We weren't fast, but Friday's lap speeds don't count toward to qualifying order so we really don't care. We think we saved a few tires and we had a lot of stuff that we wanted to try that we weren't sure was going to work out, but that's what we use Friday for now. They (CART) gave us Friday to practice and that's what we use it for, so tomorrow we'll get on the ball."
WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TODAY?
"We were working on a really comfortable race set up, but it didn't happen today so we're going to see what we can learn tomorrow morning."
WILL THE ANTICIPATED TEMPERATURE DROP AFFECT ANYTHING YOU'VE WORKED ON?
"It doesn't matter whether the temperature drops or if it rains because I have no championship points and I'm qualifying dead last. It's just that we tried to improve the cars but we don't have any more testing, so we do it on Fridays. But we'll be in the 20-second range tomorrow for qualifying."
