Shell Ford driver Kenny Brack, who has consistently been quick on the ovals this season, topped the chart again after the first day of practice at Twin Ring Motegi.
Brack posted a time or 26.062 seconds around the 1.549-mile oval to beat out Team Target drivers Juan Montoya and Jimmy Vasser who notched the second and third quickest time respectively.
ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford-Cosworth - 17th Quick - "We had some engine problems during the session. We had to pull the car in 20 minutes early. We lost a lot of time."
HOW DOES THE CAR FEEL WITH THE NEW WING CONFIGURATION?
"I think it is a good configuration. I think it's the right way to go and it should make racing a little more exciting."
ROBERTO MORENO -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - 10th Quick - "The handling of the car should be good for the race. That's what we concentrated on this afternoon. Even thought we focused on our race setup, we still managed to run a good time. I am very, very happy with the setup we have for the race which is what we concentrated on in this session. We played with the car and fixed the front of the car, which I was not happy with this afternoon. We can probably get a little more out of the rear of the car which we will work on tomorrow."
MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - 7th Fast - "It's nice to be back in Japan after racing here in Formula 3. As for the car, we are not in Kenny's class yet but we are working on it. The car had a slight understeer problem in the early session. This afternoon, we were able to work on the race setup which will help for Saturday but we need a little more speed for tomorrow."
KENNY BRACK -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - Fastest of the Day - "I love this track. It's a very challenging track to drive. It's nice to be fast on the first day of practice but it's the last lap of the race that really counts. Every race we have been to this year we seem to have problems. We have been wheeling the spare can and the primary car and in and out of the garage each Friday of race week. It has been a little bit irritating. But this Friday everything -- wait, today's Thursday. We may have to stay home tomorrow! The first day at each event has been frustrating for us. We just need to keep working hard and stay in front."
MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- Big Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - 8th Quick - "We wanted to get the car better but it is pretty good right now. I couldn't get a clear lap when I was trying to turn some quick times. There is more in the car for tomorrow."
WHAT AFFECT WILL THE HANDFORD WING MAKE COME RACE DAY?
"I don't think it will be much of a difference."
CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big Kmart/Route 66 Ford-Cosworth - 5th Quick - "The car is consistent. I feel it is better than fifth place. I wanted to do better. I am disappointed."
HOW IS THE DRAFTING DIFFERENT WITH THE NEW WING?
"I think there is more of a tow out there from the car in front of you. I think it's going to help with passing."
MEMO GIDLEY -32- Player's Ford-Cosworth - 19th Quick - "The motor is running good but we just have not got the car where I want it yet. It's not real comfortable for me right now, it's moving around on me - it's just not where I need it. We need to make the car a bit more aggressive."
TARSO MARQUES -34- Panasonic Ford-Cosworth - 24th Quick - "I missed half of the session with some problems. We have a lot to learn, especially with the chassis and the team. It is the first time this team has worked together. It's going to be hard for us, but they are doing a great job of working together."
HOW IS THE SWIFT-FORD COMBO WORKING OUT? "We had only a few days of testing with the car. The first time we ran the car we ran it with the Honda engine and now we switched to the Ford and the first time we ran this configuration was this morning. I think we have big potential. It's going to be very difficult for us to be fast straight away but I think in a few races we will be there"
