CHAMPCAR/CART: Ford Racing Monterrey qualifying notes

PATRICK CARPENTIER ( ...

PATRICK CARPENTIER (#32 Player's/Forsythe Ford-Cosworth) - Qualified 6th -
"I'm happy, but I'm also a little bit relieved. We did a lot of work this winter and we kept telling everyone that we were going to be much more competitive, and I think this team is still going to get better. Sixth place is not first but it's much higher up than I was last year on a similar track, so it's a good start. We'll see how it goes in the race tomorrow, but we showed that we have speed." IS IT GOING TO BE TOUGH TO PASS TOMORROW? "It's going to be very tough to pass tomorrow. If you put two wheels offline you'll just spin. It's going to be tough to get by people, but it's a long race and there's a lot of ways to pass people, whether it's on the grass or on the track.."

ORIOL SERVIA (#22 Sigma Autosport Ford-Cosworth) - Qualified 8th -
"I think eighth in my first qualifying effort with the team is quite good. It's been a tough winter and I haven't had much testing, but I think everybody's quite motivated and trying to put everything together. I'm very happy."

WHAT ARE YOURTHOUGHTS ABOUT THE RACE?

"I think having good, consistent brakes is going to be key. It's very easy to make mistakes. It's very easy to touch the grass outside the track and inside the track because when somebody goes off they put a lot of debris on the track and that's not nice."

HAVE THE TRACK CONDITIONS IMPROVED?

"It's getting better and during the race it's going to get better and better. But it's very easy to make mistakes and that is going to be the key thing."

ALEX TAGLIANI (#33 Player's/Forsythe Ford-Cosworth) - Qualified 13th -
"I'm satisfied. Ford did a good job improving its engine during the offseason and Kenny proved that the engine is there. Our car was good enough to be in the top five but its frustrating with the two groups of qualifying. They really need to do something. It's not fair for everybody and hopefully they will change it because it's bad. If you have a bad weekend now it's tough to get in the fast group for the next weekend."

SOME OF THE DRIVERS HAVE SAID THAT THERE'S JUST ONE RACING LINE OUT THERE.

"Yeah, there's one line. People who try to pass are going to be in trouble. It's sandy, there's a lot of dust, it's dirty and it's going to be tough to pass. Hopefully we'll have good pit stops and good strategy."

BRYAN HERTA (#77 Zakspeed/Forsythe Ford-Cosworth) - Qualified 18th -
"We just missed a little bit and the car was a little loose. We made a couple of adjustments during the session that weren't good but that's the thing. (At) this place the stars, the moon and everything else has got to align and be just right to get it done. We had a good first run and then I just didn't get a good lap in on the second set and I needed to be able to do that to move up a little bit."

HAVE YOU GOT MORE LEFT IN THE CAR?

"Oh yeah. The car is good, no problem there. I just don't think I was able to show everybody the true potential of it. We'll see. We'll keep working on it and see what happens in the race."

MICHEL JOURDAIN (#16 Herdez Bettenhausen Ford-Cosworth) - Qualified 24th -
"I'm really disappointed. When we went out towards of end of the morning session we didn't get a chance to get a feel for new tires, and then when I went out for qualifying this afternoon the car was not very good. We made a change and it didn't improve much, plus at the end of the session I made a couple of mistakes. I had a couple of good laps going but I made a some mistakes which ended our chances of having a good qualifying session."

BRUCE WOOD (CART Program Director, Ford-Cosworth) -
"It's fantastic! Everybody has been saying all weekend that driving on this track has been like driving on ice, and for the last couple of years we've really struggled with driveability. This is the kind of circuit that 12 months ago might've been a nightmare for us and to come here and get the pole is fantastic. I couldn't ask for a better way to start the season."

IT LOOKS AS IF THE OFFSEASON WORK PAID OFF FOR YOU.

"It's really a tribute to all the guys in Northampton (UK), all the guys in Torrance (CA) and all the guys that worked on the transient dyno in Detroit. It's great and I hope we can go out and do
