VASSER FORMALLY ANNOUNCED AS THE DRIVER OF THE NO. 8 TEAM RAHAL FORD-COSWORTH FOR 2002 - Team Rahal announced today at a press conference that Jimmy Vasser will pilot the Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola beginning in the 2002 season. Vasser, the 1996 CART FedEx Championship Series champion, will assume the seat to be vacated by Kenny Brack following the completion of the 2001 season. Vasser has competed in 165 CART events since his rookie season in 1992 and has nine wins and six poles to his credit.
PATRICK CARPENTIER (#32 Player's Forsythe Ford-Cosworth) - 12th-fastest during Friday practice - "The car is OK. We're trying to gain overall speed right now. We seem to be lacking overall grip, a little bit, and we're trying to make that better for tomorrow. It's difficult right now, but we're just trying to improve it. We should be top 10 tomorrow, so that should be good.."
WHAT ARE AIMING FOR TOMORROW IN QUALIFYING? "I'd like to be in the top five for qualifying, but top eight is more realistic."
KENNY BRACK (#8 Shell Ford-Cosworth) - 20th-fastest during the afternoon session - "We've had problems getting the car balanced; that's it. We were not fast and we don't know why and we're trying to solve it. We're going to each race trying to win, and right now, we're not in the position we need to be in and we're working hard to get to the front of the pack.."
YOU HAVE A NEW RIDE NEXT YEAR, BUT YOU SEEM TOTALLY FOCUSED ON WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR. "The future is now, and we need to get good here and get a good result. Next year is next year and we'll deal with it then.."
YOU WERE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR LAST YEAR AND NOW YOU'RE IN THE HUNT FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP. DID YOU EXPECT THAT TO COME SO SOON? "We expect to win races. Team Rahal and myself, and everybody here, is dedicated and we're expected to do well. That's why we're working hard right now to climb up the grid.."
WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER THREE GUYS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP? "They're all tough. Right now, Team Penske is the team that has everything sorted out for this weekend; they're first and second, I believe, so far. Hopefully things will change for tomorrow."
ORIOL SERVIA (#22 Sigma Autosport Ford-Cosworth) - 24th-fastest during the afternoon practice - "I would have to say this has probably been our most difficult day so far. We have tried to set up the car (for Laguna Seca), but it's been a lot harder than we anticipated. We'll try again tomorrow."
