Vasser and Jourdain among the quickest on the first day of Fontana.
FONTANA, CALIFORNIA . . . Team Rahal drivers Jimmy Vasser and Michel Jourdain Jr. finished in the top-five in practice for The California 500.
Vasser piloted his Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola to the second quick time with a fast lap of 232.988 mph in the afternoon session. Vasser won the pole at California in 1998.
Jourdain was fifth quick overall with a fast lap of 232.336 mph. Jourdain turned his fast lap in the afternoon session and is vying for his best ever career start on an oval.
Alex Tagliani used a Ford-Cosworth powered engine to capture the top spot on the day with a fast lap of 233.726 mph.
Practice and qualifying will resume tomorrow for Sunday's race which will be seen live on SPEED Channel at 3:30 PM EST.
Jimmy Vasser (#8 Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires) - "The team did a great job getting everything back together after last week. We had three piles of junk when we got back from Australia and the guys worked their ass off this week. Our cars are running pretty well right now. I wasn't happy with the car this morning, but we made some great strides in the afternoon. Team Rahal and Cosworth have a great record on the super speedways, and they were ready to go today. There is still some room to go with the car to make it better in traffic. The car is quick and that Cosworth power really goes on the top end."
Michel Jourdain Jr. (#9 Office Depot/Gigante Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires) - "We had some trouble this morning with the car and we just had to try a lot of different settings. We finally found the set-up and things fell into place. I am not really concerned about qualifying for this track. You can drive from the back to the front at this track. The race is the focus and we are working to make the car as good as possible for Sunday."
