TRACY SEVENTH AND FRANCHITTI 13TH IN QUALIFYING

FONTANA, Calif., (Oct. 30, 1998) - Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti were seventh and 13th respectively in practice today for the season-finale at California Speedway, a grueling 500-mile race worth $1 million to the winner (ESPN, Sunday, 3:30 p.m. EST).

Adrian Fernandez was quickest on the day with a lap of 30.877 seconds, averaging 236.564 mph on the 2-mile superspeedway. Michael Andretti was second fastest with a time of 31.026 seconds (235.426 mph). Tracy's fastest time was clocked in at 31.189 seconds (234.196 mph), while Franchitti circled the oval in 31.409 seconds (232.558 mph).

The new Hanford Device implemented by CART for safety reasons has slowed all of the competitors down compared to last season. Every indication is that everyone will be slower than today's practice times in tomorrow's single-car qualifying session without the benefit of drafting enjoyed in practice.

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD/HONDA/FIRESTONE: (7th with a lap-time of 31.189 / 234.196 mph)

"I'm really happy with the way the KOOL car is handling. We've been working on the balance and the setup for drafting. But I also think we can do pretty well on our own - we ran like a 232 (mph) all alone at the beginning of the session. I think it's going to be about that for the pole because you won't be able to draft in qualifying. So, I think we're in good shape."

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD/HONDA/FIRESTONE: (13th with a lap-time of 31.409 / 232.558 mph)

"We didn't get the ultimate tow, which is why we weren't up front. I'm not particularly worried because we're working on the car for the race.

I'm a lot more confident than I was in Michigan. I think we've got the car better and I'm more comfortable in the car. So, hopefully we can get another strong result for Team KOOL Green on Sunday and clinch second place in the championship."
