Fontana, CA (November 1, 1998) - FedEx Championship Series Rookie of the Year Tony Kanaan surprised the field Sunday when he recorded the fastest time during the morning warm-up session for today's 3:30 p.m. (ET) Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota at California Speedway.

Kanaan, a Brazilian driving the LCI Reynard Honda, roared around the 2-mile oval in 31.397 seconds, 232.646 miles per hour. The Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year winner will start from the 23rd starting spot in the field of 28 after qualifying at 227.715 mph.

Second-fastest in Sunday's morning practice was Scotsman Dario Franchitti, who recorded a 31.418, 232.491 mph lap in the KOOL Reynard Honda. He starts eighth in today's 250-lap race. Third was California native Jimmy Vasser at 31.419, 232.484 mph in the Target Reynard Honda. Vasser is on the outside of the front row for today's race.

Fourth-fastest was Brazilian Gil de Ferran in the Valvoline Cummins Special Honda at 31.511, 231.805 mph. He starts from the 10th spot on the grid. Rounding out the top five was Champ Car veteran Al Unser Jr. The Albuquerque native turned a 31.531, 231.658 mph lap in the Marlboro Penske Mercedes and is qualified in the 13th position.

Sixth-fastest was PPG Cup winner Alex Zanardi. Seventh was JJ Lehto while Greg Moore was eighth, polesitter Scott Pruett was ninth and Michael Andretti was 10th.

The winner of today's 500-mile event will take home $1 million and a fan also has a chance to win a million through CART's Million Dollar Payday promotion.

Today's race will be telecast live on ESPN at 3:30 p.m. (ET) in the United States as well as to more than 190 countries worldwide. The CART Radio Network also will broadcast today's event to more than 150 stations throughout the U.S.
