FONTANA, Calif. (October 29, 2000) - The Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota was postponed due to inclement weather at California Speedway Sunday and has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT, local) Monday. The race is scheduled to air live on ESPN television.

The decision for postponing the race came from CART President of Racing Operations Hal Whiteford after the completion of 33 laps and a delay of 2 hours, 39 minutes. The Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota will resume on Lap 34 with a single-file restart. Retired cars will not be allowed to re-enter the race.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Juan Montoya (Target Toyota Lola) was the leader when the race was red-flagged and FedEx Championship Series points leader Gil de Ferran (Marlboro Honda Reynard) was running third. Team Rahal rookie Kenny Brack (Shell Ford-Reynard), who currently stands 20 points behind de Ferran in the championship, was running in sixth position and Patrick Racing driver Adrian Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State Ford Reynard), who trails de Ferran by six points, was running ninth. Paul Tracy (KOOL Honda Reynard), who began the race 20 points behind de Ferran, retired from the event with a mechanical problem after completing 23 laps and has been eliminated from contention for the championship.

There are a maximum of 21 points still available - 20 points for a victory and one point for leading the most laps - when the race resumes Monday. De Ferran gained the championship point for the pole Saturday.

The Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota is the fourth race to be postponed this season. The others, in order, are the Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix at Nazareth Speedway, the Firestone Firehawk 500 at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan and the Miller Lite 225 at The Milwaukee Mile.

This is the first race since 1986 at Road America, which began Sept. 21 and completed on Oct. 4, to have been started on one day and finished on another.
