Runway Madness Almost Sold Out
Fontana, CA (October 23, 1998) -- With just over one week remaining before the inaugural Runway Madness Presented by FedEx charity extravaganza, co-chairperson Shelley Unser, wife of two-time PPG Cup winner Al Unser Jr., has announced that the event is a near sellout. As of Tuesday evening, fewer than 60 of 1,200 tickets remained for the first-time event.
Runway Madness Presented by FedEx is a charitable event which will benefit Championship Auto Racing Auxiliary (CARA) Charities, the Championship Drivers Association (CDA), and Loma Linda (Calif.) University Children's Hospital. The inaugural event, which precedes the season-ending Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota at California Speedway, will take place Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 11 p.m. in the Lockheed Hangar at Ontario Airport in Ontario, Calif.
The majority of FedEx Championship Series drivers, owners and their families are scheduled to attend, along with such notable celebrities as Anthony Edwards (ER), Alfonso Ribiero (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Saved by the Bell). The festivities will include cocktails, dinner, dancing, a floor show, karaoke and a dunk tank featuring three-time FedEx Championship Series championship-winning owner Chip Ganassi.
One of the highlights of the evening will be a live and silent auction, featuring a number of unique and somewhat bizarre items. Included are a driver's seat signed by two-time PPG Cup winner Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda); individual pace car rides with actor/team owner Paul Newman, Mario Andretti and Rick Mears; a framed collage of autographed photo race credentials for all 1998 FedEx Championship Series owners and drivers, including Newman, Andretti, Mears, David Letterman and Walter Payton; a one-of-a-kind painting by renowned motorsports artist Randy Owens; a quilt of underwear collected from 1998 FedEx Championship Series drivers; a pair of flip-flops formerly belonging to Mears; a pair of jeans formerly belonging to Roger Penske; an autographed cigar contributed by Carl Haas; the last pair of glasses belonging to retiring three-time PPG Cup winner Bobby Rahal; a scrub shirt autographed by the cast of ER; an autographed hat from NYPD Blue star Dennis Franz; and a Scott Pruett (Visteon Reynard Ford) garden package.
Runway Madness Presented by FedEx will be hosted by Bob Varsha, lead announcer for FedEx Championship Series telecasts, and Tommy Kendall, who provides colorful commentary on selected CART telecasts throughout the year. Tickets are $150. For ticket information, contact Kem Stringer at the CART office at (248) 362-8800, ext. 279, but do so quickly.
